Janet sat in front of me in Miss McCrea’s freshman English class. For much of that year I had a crush on her, but I was too shy to talk to her unless she initiated the conversation.

Miss McCrea was very strict, unpredictably fiery, obsessively neurotic and deeply passionate about language and literature. Her classes could be explosive and intensely exhausting, leaving little time for productive activities like sleeping, or daydreaming about what Janet might say to me.

Luckily, Janet was usually chatty, but in a subdued way that was graceful and dignified. She patiently and warmly drew one introvert out of his shell. Definitely one of the nicest people in our class.
